The colour revamp of a nursery school in the Western Cape resulted in a stimulating space for its tiny inhabitants.
LITTLE PEOPLES’ PLAY TIME
When Kabouterland Nursery School on Blaauwklippen Road in Stellenbosch needed a colour revamp, the staff decided to err on the side of bright and fresh on the inside and cool on the outside. The school turned to Tubby Currie and his company, Paintkor, to ring the necessary changes. And Tubby, who has been in the painting and renovations business since 1984, rose to the challenge with aplomb.
After a staff vote, Plascon Wallseal in California Dreaming (G7-B2-3) was decided on for the walls, and Feathery (B1-E2-3) as the accent colour.
Plascon Wallseal (WAS 1), a durable acrylic emulsion, was selected for the outside walls because of its superior waterproofing properties. “We painted a number of colour swatches on the walls before making our final decision,” Tubby explains.
The original plan was to just paint the school building but they ended up doing the roof (in Plascon NuRoof in Blue Azure) and the exterior boundary wall and fencing.
“It took us three weeks to complete the project, from the cleaning down process to the preparation and finally the painting,” says Tubby. The roof and steel work on the surrounding gates and fencing formed part of the project too.”
Kabouterland, which caters for little ones from as tiny as three months old to five years old, the year before they go to “big school”, needed a range of options, from restful shades for the small babies, to bright colours that stimulate the older tots and encourage play. With this in mind the play areas were given a colour makeover in bright primary shades: Plascon Wall & All Red Flame (R7-A1-1), Yellow Balloon (Y5-A1-3) and Atlantic Beach (B5-B1-1) “The school looks stunning now, especially with our new signage. The children were in awe seeing their space slowly change in front of their eyes, and we have had a very positive response from the parents,” says Kim Wiese, manager at Kabouterland.
