Interior designer Donald Nxumalo of DNX Interiors speaks to us about how he will interpret Exotic Euphoria, one of the four key themes for the 2018 Plascon Colour Forecast.
How do you plan to interpret the Exotic Euphoria theme?
The colours appeal to me; they give a tribal look and feel that is of African roots, mine specifically, which is Ndebele. I will be making use of some Ndebele patterns, combined with my take on a contemporary style. I will be using ceramic pots painted with Plascon colours. I‘ll also be making use of style inspiration from other African countries that appeal to me, such as Tanzania and Mali. The room will be a lounge, the most communal room in the house. It is a space where you invite people in and welcome them to your world. It allows the opportunity to display colours from all over the globe.

I like the saying, “Date a trend, marry a classic.” I think that I manage to do this with my own sense of style. Classics are dominant in what I do. I believe we are still creating what will become the South African style. It’s in its developing stages.
