• Plascon Cashmere Samovar (Y4-E2-1)
• Plascon Aerolak Spray Paints in colours of your choice
• Drop sheet
• Hamilton’s paint roller
• Plastic paint tray
• Chalk
• Lay down a drop sheet and paint the walls with two coats of Plascon Cashmere Samovar. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second. The neon brights of the graffiti will “pop” against the putty-coloured Samovar, plus Plascon Cashmere is the perfect base for spray paint.
• Decide where to place the graffiti design: do you want to see it from the bed or to have it make an impact when you walk into the room?
• Discuss the design in detail with the graffiti artist and sketch it out on paper until everyone is happy with the concept and dimensions. If you’re tackling the spray-painting yourself, practise by sticking sheets of paper up onto a wall and trying your hand before you do the real thing.
• Using Aerolak spray paint, start with a light outline of the design in a tone close to the wall colour. Beginners may want to use chalk.
• Apply “fill-ins” in different tones of colour. Aerolak dries in a minute, allowing you to get to the next layer quickly. Layer your colours by working in overlapping lines. This is a technique that comes easier with experience, but the process basically involves applying the paint at an angle and understanding the pressure of the can. Avoid overspraying – it results in drips. (In this tag, the artist opted for some dripping as part of the design.)
• Lay the background colour, then the top colour, then return to the background colour until you achieve a clean line between the two. This layering and cutting away results in a blocky appearance and contributes to the 3D effect.
