How to: Perk up a playroom

Paint gets playful with a playroom wall and an old pogo horse

FOR THE WALL

We used:

• Plascon Cashmere White (CAS1)
• Plascon Cashmere Panorama Lights (Y4-A1-2)
• Hamilton’s Polypile roller
• Measuring tape
• Pencil
• 50mm masking tape
• Spirit level
• Hamilton’s paintbrush
• Artist’s brush

Get the décor effect:

• Using the Hamilton’s Polypile roller, give the wall two coats of Plascon Cashmere White (CAS1).
• Decide on your stripe “pattern”. We opted for a sequence of 100mm in yellow, 50mm in white, 20mm in yellow, 50mm in white, 50mm in yellow and 50mm in white.
• Measure out the sequence along the wall and make a small pencil mark where each new stripe begins.
• With the 50mm-wide masking tape, mask out the white stripes, using your pencil marks as a guide to where to place the masking tape. Use a spirit level to ensure the masking tape lines are straight.
• Using the Hamilton’s paintbrush, paint between the masking tape with the yellow Plascon Cashmere Panorama Lights (Y4-A1-2).
• Remove the masking tape before the paint is completely dry to reveal the white stripes. Do any touch-ups needed using an artist’s brush.

FOR THE POGO PONY

We used:

• Plascon Enamel Doors & Trims Black (G2)
• Plascon Enamel Doors & Trims Medium Yellow (G6)
• Plascon Velvaglo Safari Sun (O7-C1-1)
• Plascon Velvaglo White (VLO1)
• Plascon Velvaglo Njabulo (R6-A1-1)
• Plascon Mild Steel Primer (UC501)
• Plascon Multi-Surface Primer (WUP1)
• Drop sheet
• Rough sandpaper (for use on metal)
• Fine sandpaper (for use on wood)
• Hamilton’s Ensign 25mm paintbrush
• Artist’s brush

Get the décor effect:

• Working on a drop sheet, sand down the legs, springs and the wooden body of the Pogo Pony.
• Paint the legs and springs with Plascon Mild Steel Primer (UC501) and allow to dry for 16 hours.
• Wipe down the wood and plastic seat to make sure they are dust and dirt free.
• Paint the legs with Plascon Enamel Doors & Trims Black (G2) and the springs with Plascon Enamel Doors & Trims Medium Yellow (G6). Apply two coats, allowing the paint to dry between coats.
• Paint the wooden body with Plascon Velvaglo Safari Sun (O7-C1-1). Apply two coats, allowing two hours’ drying time between coats.
• Prime the plastic with Plascon Multi-Surface Primer (WUP1). Allow to dry and paint with Plascon Velvaglo Njabulo (R6-A1-1). Apply two coats, allowing two hours’ drying time between coats.
• Using the artist’s brush, paint in the eyes using Plascon Velvaglo White (VLO1) and Plascon Enamel Doors & Trims Black (G2). Use Plascon Velvaglo Njabulo (R6-A1-1) for the halter.
