How to: Paint a ball-and-claw cabinet

What you will need

  • Plascon Double Velvet Antique Linen
  • Plascon Double Velvet Train Smoke
  • Plascon Acrylic Scumble Glaze
  • Plascon Paint Effects Stainer in Raw Umber STA 1 (optional)
  • Plascon Acrylic Glazecoat Matt
  • Plascon Multi-surface Primer
  • Polycell Sugar Soap
  • Latex gloves
  • Scotch Brite pad
  • 220 grit sandpaper
  • Sponge roller
  • Paint tray
  • White bristle brush
  • Steel wool

Get the décor effect

  • Clean the piece of furniture with Polycell Sugar Soap, diluting 100g of soap powder in a litre of warm water. Be sure to wear gloves and use a Scotch Brite pad, available at any hardware store. Once all the oil and grease have been removed, rinse with clean water. Leave to dry, at least overnight.
  • Sand the surface, wipe clean and then prime using the Multi-surface Primer. Leave to dry for at least 16 hours. For a professional, smooth finish, don’t skip any steps in the priming process.
  • Using a sponge roller, paint the piece with the Double Velvet Antique Linen and allow to dry. Add half a cup of Double Velvet Train Smoke to a cup of Scumble Glaze. If you would like a slightly darker effect, add a few drops of Raw Umber. Apply the glaze to the surface using the white bristle brush then, using the steel wool, drag in a horizontal direction. When completely dry, reapply glaze and drag in the opposite direction using the steel wool.
  • Seal with Plascon Glazecoat.
