A design - a simple ink drawing with bold outlines (take a picture from a magazine, the Internet or a piece of fabric)
Overhead projector
Transparency made at a photocopy shop
White chalk
Artist's brushes in varying sizes
Get the décor effect
Choose the design and have a photocopy shop make it into a transparency.
Paint the wall surface with the background colour. We used Plascon Polvin Black.
Use an overhead projector to project the design onto the wall.
Use a piece of white chalk to trace along the edges of the projected image.
Using the mural colour, go over the chalk lines with a fine artist’s brush (freehand) and fill in the larger areas with a wider brush. Leave to dry and repeat, if necessary, until the background colour is no longer visible.
Tips
The projected image will be more visible and easier to trace in a dark room.
White paint on a black background requires more layers than the other way round.
