MARCH COLOUR OF THE MONTH: Gold

Why is gold our colour of the month?
Awards season is upon us. The Grammys and Golden Globes are done, The Oscars are just about dusted and the London Olympics are glimmering on the mid-year horizon. So gold is clearly going places right now. Including into your home.

What’s on-trend about gold?
Fashion weeks have all been aflutter with gold. Alexander McQueen, Roberto Cavalli and Gucci – to name but a few – have all fallen under its spell. Why? Because this colour is more than just bling. In fact, it’s remarkably versatile – from shiny yellow to brushed white to rosy gold, there really is a tone for every occasion. We’re also starting to see more gold in trend-forward décor – for instance, in the strategic use of metallic paints and glitzy accessories like Spanish designer Jaime Hayón’s Hope Bird.

Plascon’s favourite golds...

  • Plascon Pearl Designer Range Gold DRP 2 (for soft pale gold)
  • Plascon Metallic Designer Range DRM 3 (for antique gold)
  • Plascon Paint Effects Gold MET1 (for antique gold)

Are you a gold person?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, gold people are leaders with a deep understanding of who they are. They also tend to have...

  • Wisdom and grace
  • A willingness to share their knowledge
  • Loyalty
  • Responsibility and good organisational skills
  • An appreciation of work and good service.

Is gold right for you?
Gold people value orderliness and stability. They also have a love for a calm and tranquil space.
On a tangible level, subtle use of gold will certainly give a room some extra glamour and a tasteful, opulent feel. But its uplifting qualities can also help relieve depression, mental stress and fear. A valuable colour in more ways than one.

Is it right for your room?
Gold can be added to any room to give it a lift. Here’s how it works its magic in every possible space...

  • Golden tones go beautifully with natural colours – use them together in any room in the house.
  • Use gold with indigo in a bedroom to help induce sleep.
  • Or add touches of it to an office spaces to enhance loyalty and trust.

Which colours make it work better?
Gold complements almost all colours giving them even more impact and intensity. It goes particularly well with...

  • BLUES – from indigo to turquoise
  • NEUTRALS – the contrast will create added interest and texture in a space
  • GREENS, VIOLETS OR REDS – but it doesn’t stop there; in fact, gold can add a lift to just about any colour.

TIPS on using gold in your space…

  • Gold does not have to be bright and bling – it comes in a spectrum from glitzy and glam to pale and antique.
  • Decide on a tone that appeals to you and add touches of it in the form of furniture or accessories for an instant room-lift.
  • This works particularly well with picture frames, lamp stands and feature furnishings or finishes.
  • The wonderful interaction of light with gold draws the eye and attracts attention. Therefore, be sure to use it on objects or spaces that you want to highlight.
  • Gold can also be used on mouldings and skirtings for a bit of a pop. Alternatively it makes a great colour for a paint effect on a feature wall.
